Richard Conn Moats, 84 of Hacker Valley passed away on Tuesday, March 17, 2026 at his home surrounded by his family.

He was born July 11, 1941 in Lick Run to the late Edward and Virginia Godfrey Moats. He was a school bus driver for the Webster County Board of Education for 33 years, a proud United States Marine serving four years, a member of the West Virginia National Guard, serving 21 years, a loader operator for Lake Lumber for 10 years, a former truck driver, and owned his own firewood business.

Richard loved sports and previously officiated junior high and high school basketball. He enjoyed hunting and spending time outdoors. He was a member of the Odd Fellows, VFW, and was methodist by faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Lee Moats.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Arvella Carpenter Moats; sons: Archie Moats and Marty (Tammy) Moats; brothers: Ed (Carol) Moats, Dee Frank (Karen) Moats, and Arley (Genevieve) Moats; grandchildren: Grant Moats, Malary (Shane) Hypes, and Natasha Moats; great-grandchildren: Emerson and Avella; and many extended family and friends to mourn his passing.

Friends may join the family for visitation on Monday, March 23, 2026 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at Dodd & Reed Funeral Home, Webster Springs.

Funeral Services to celebrate Richard’s life will be held on Tuesday, March 24, 2026 at 12:00 Noon at Dodd & Reed Funeral Home with Pastor Chris Cosner officiating. Interment will follow in Replete Cemetery.
