Webster Springs

Patty Lou Mathes, 92, of Webster Springs, WV, peacefully joined her Lord and Savior on Sunday, June 23, 2024. Patty was born on September 19, 1931, to the late Bud and Hilda Stout.

She graduated from Webster Springs High School and Glenville State College. Patty dedicated decades to teaching elementary school, even spending time as a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse. Patty spent her life serving God, her family, and her community. She loved, taught, and influenced many generations in Webster County.

Patty married the love of her life in 1951, Burldean Mathes. They enjoyed many wonderful years together, sharing their love for the outdoors through camping and traveling until his passing in 1994. Together, they created a beautiful family, teaching them to love God, work hard, and care for others.

A dedicated member of the First United Methodist Church of Webster Springs, Patty cherished her church family. She also loved nature and was an active member of the garden club for many years, winning numerous awards for her flower arrangements. Patty was strong, independent, funny, and creative. She enjoyed watching her Mountaineers play and had a special fondness for Dr. Pepper. She loved feeding and watching birds, tending to her fish, and chatting with neighbors. Patty doted on the family’s pets, with Zeke and Tucker being very special friends to her. She was adored by her children, Terry and Mike, and held her son-in-law Tom and daughter-in-law Janet in high regard. Patty was deeply involved in the lives of her grandchildren from childhood into adulthood and had a particular soft spot for her great-grandchildren, often spending time doing special activities, having sleepovers, and spoiling them.

Patty is preceded in death by her beloved husband Burldean, her parents Bud and Hilda Stout, her brother Pete and sister-in-law Jackie, her sister Cordie Davis and brother-in-law Bill, her niece Cathy Oakford, and very dear family friend Walt Studer.

She is survived by her daughter Terry Clark and son-in-law Tom, her son Mike and daughter-in-law Janet, her sister Elouise Sandifer, her sister Connie Wills and brother in law Willy. She is also survived by her grandchildren Megan Russo and husband Dave, Stephanie Vedral and husband Keith, Chad Mathes, Ryan Mathes and wife Jamie. Great-grandchildren JT, Haley, Hannah, and Harper Vedral, Izzy and Zuri Searls, and Rogan Russo. Additionally, Patty leaves behind many loved nieces and nephews, as well as great-nieces and nephews.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at both Webster Springs Memorial and Ruby Memorial Hospital for their compassion, care, and kindness in Patty’s final days.
