Obituary

Olen Ray Carpenter, 93 of Cowger Hill passed away Friday, July 10, 2026 at Webster Healthcare Center.

Olen was born October 1, 1932 on Cowger Hill and was the son of the late Jasper Newton and Roena Cowger Carpenter. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Irene Gladys Silman Carpenter; siblings, Edna Simmons, Alma Anderson, Alta Cogar, Bertha Simmons, Goldie Cool, Macil Simmons, Hubert Carpenter and Opha Carpenter; special nephew, David Anderson, who became known by the family as his twin and also a special lifelong friend Buck Fisher.

Olen attended Long Run Community Church on Cowger Hill. He enjoyed hunting, gardening, woodworking in his workshop, spending time at his hunting cabin, but most importantly he loved spending time with his family. Olen worked 38 years at Holly River State Park; in 1991 the Olen Carpenter Pavilion was built in recognition of Olen's many years of hard work and dedication to the park.

Surviving are his children, Don (Nettie) Carpenter of Morgantown, Darlene (Lee) McLaughlin of Cowen, Mark (Tammy) Carpenter of Cowger Hill and Leon (Linda) Carpenter of Hacker Valley; grandchildren, Laura (Mark) Hardway, Michael (Amy) Cochran, James (Macy) Cochran, Justin (Katie) Cochran, Sharon (Noel) Kerns, Don, Jr "Bub" (Dena) Carpenter, Chandler (Vanessa) Carpenter, Daniel (Tiffany) Carpenter and Jaden McCourt; seventeen great grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren; sister, Margie Cutlip and many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

Service will be held 11 AM, Tuesday, July 14, 2026 at Dodd & Reed Funeral Home, Webster Springs with Pastor Larry Cochran officiating. Burial will follow at Ware Cemetery on Cowger Hill.

Friends may join the family for visitation 6-9 PM, Monday evening at the funeral home.
