John Edgel Payne, 72 of Webster Springs went home to be with the Lord on Monday, November 16, 2015 at his home. He was born January 17, 1943 in Webster Springs to Lawrence and Effie Mae Westfall Payne and grew up in Webster Springs, attending Webster Springs High School. He moved to Massillon, Ohio and went to work at Brady’s Pink Cottage and Cindy’s Drive-In.
On October 16, 1962, after he had completed Boot Camp, John entered the United States Navy where he was assigned to the USS Chicago, a Missile Firing Ship, in San Francisco, California. He sailed to Vietnam from May 1966 to October of 1966. During his career he received the Vietnam Medal and National Defense Service Medal. He transferred to the Reserves on October 11, 1966.
In March of 1967 he entered the Millwright Apprenticeship Program with Stauffer Chemical Company and completed the program in September of 1971. He moved to Ohio where he worked for General Motors and returned to Webster Springs, working for various coal mines.
John is survived by his companion Marie Cogar and her children Lisa Henry and A.J. Cogar; son John E. Payne, Jr.; daughter Kimberly Runyon; brothers Mike Payne and Robin (wife Kathryn) Payne; sisters Betty (husband Robert) Humphries and Lamona (husband Robert) Carpenter; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and his dog Venus. He was preceded in death by his parents; son James Payne; brothers David and Phillip Payne; infant brothers Romie, Delmas, and Arthur Payne; and sister Karen Sue Payne.
Friends may join the family for visitation on Thursday, November 19, 2015 from 11:00 to 1:00 PM at Dodd & Reed Funeral Home. Funeral Services to celebrate John’s life will be held at 1:00 PM with Rev. Curt Davis officiating. Interment will follow in Union Cemetery, Parcoal.
