John Franklin Canfield Jr., went to be with His Lord & Savior on Wednesday, February 4, 2026 at United Hospital Center, surrounded by Kathie, his children, and grandchildren. He was born May 7, 1949, to the late Agusta May & John Franklin Canfield in Charleston, West Virginia.

Frank spent his childhood in Clay County until he enlisted into the Army at 18. He spent several years in the United States Army, & served in Vietnam. He was a skidder operator by trade.

Frank was an avid fisherman & hunter. He found his greatest peace camping along the Elk River, where he spent many years after his retirement. He never met a stranger and could be found swapping hunting or fishing adventures at nearly any camp or home along the river. He was known & loved for his storytelling, most often told with his signature wit and larger-than-life twist. He had a passion for digging yellow root and ginseng or just about anything that allowed him to be in the woods. Left to cherish his memory, the love of his life, companion/wife of almost 40 years, Mary Kathleen “Kathie” Holcomb, one son, David Holcomb, (Heather Barbe) of Webster Springs, WV., and four daughters, Mary Le Ann Holcomb & (Eric Cochran) of Diana, WV, Jacqueline Holcomb & (Bub Tanner) of Webster Springs, WV, Shawnda Holcomb of Kenna, WV, & Loretta Holcomb (TJ Springer) of Warren, OH.

Papaw Frank also survived by his grandchildren, Rick & (Tiffany) Holcomb, of Cowen, WV, Kendall & (Meaghan) Cogar, of Bonaire, Georgia, Kennedy Cogar, Rockville, MD, Michael & (Casey) Holcomb, Camden On Gauley, WV, Jordan & Jordis Dilley, of Webster Springs, WV, Braylon Springer, Warren, Ohio, Laci McIe & (Hayden Myers), of Diana, WV. McKenzie Sparks of Webster Springs, WV, Tristan Blake of Kenna, WV, and 5 great grandchildren, Jackson, Chloe, & Carlie Williams & Jaxon Holcomb all of Cowen, WV, & Waylon Holcomb of Camden On Gauley, WV.

He survived by his brothers Jerrell Canfield, of Clay, WV, Jackie & (Joyce) Canfield of Dille, WV, sisters, Sharon Sue Tinney & (Charlie) of Bedford, KY, Shiela May Canfield of Clay, WV, Melody Dawn & (Shawn) of Weirton, WV along with a host of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by His mother in law, Vella Leone Hall, who he loved and thought the world of. His father in law, Bobbie Joe Hall, a sister Sherry Henry, his cousin and best friend, William G. “Pee Wee” Schoolcraft, best friend Jimmy Adkins, and his furry companion & sidekick, Gizmo.

He was loved by all that knew him and his presence will be greatly missed.

Friends may join the family for visitation on Saturday February 14, 2026 from 6:00-9:00 pm, at Dodd & Reed Funeral Home in Webster Springs. Celebration of Life service will be held Sunday, February 15, 2026, at 2:00pm at Dodd & Reed Funeral Home with Pastor Curt Davis officiating. Family graveside service will be held at a later date.
