Herschel E. Akin, age 91, died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2011, at Rowan Reg. Med. Center, Salisbury, NC. He was born April 4, 1919, at North Bend, Webster Co., WV, son of the late Jaman Elijah & Mary Susan Waugh Akin, and stepson of the late Letha Roberts Akin.
He was a veteran of the USMC serving in WWII in the Pacific, and a survivor of Iwo Jima. He was retired from the PA Railroad and the NY Central Railroad with 40 years service.
He was a member of the Hamburg United Methodist Church, Hamburg, NY, the Free and Accepted Masons of NY Lodge #419, Arcade, NY; Ismailia Temple AAONMS, Buffalo, NY; Legion of Honor, Buffalo, NY; Order of the Eastern Star #176, Hamburg, NY; the American Legion; and International Order of Oddfellows, Orchard Park, NY.
Survivors include his wife of 21 years, Katherine B. Akin, daughter Carolyn Akin Dethpfs and grandchildren; Stephanie and Adam Akin, great granddaughters Isabelle and Chloe all of Machias, NY; 5 step-children: Robert F. Krazmien (Pat), Sharon Krazmien Furlano (Dominic), Deborah Krazmien Trinh, Mark Krazmien (Nannette), and Mary Krazmien Reiller (Gary). He is also survived by 19 step-grandchildren, Ruth, Robin, Rhonda, Allison, Christopher David, Darrick, Robert, Alex, Casey, Elizabeth, Emerson, Katherine, John, Ann Marie, Robert, Edward, Jennifer and Daniel, one sister in law; Blanche Akin of Beaver, PA, 10 nieces and 8 nephews.(Staying in close contact with Mary & Gil Gladwell , Margaret Pack, Margaret Blaire & Allens Woods. He also was survived by 11 great grandchildren &5 great great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jaman and Mary Akin and step mother Letha Akin, first wife; Edith Lander Aakin, brothers; Crawford Akin (Ollie), Marion Akin, sisters; Reva Akin Blum (Bob), AnnaMary Akin Woods (Lonzo), Virginia Akins Williams (Charles), and step daughter; Carol Krazmien Parry.
