Obituary

Hansford Rex Cutlip, 100, of Laurel Fork passed peacefully into Heaven on Friday, March 27, 2026. Rex was born March 2, 1926 at Jumbo and was the son of the late Charles O. “Trapper” and Mary Rosetta Cool Cutlip. He was the last of his brothers and sisters. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Rebecca Cutlip and Ardie Carpenter, sons, Wayne “Bear” Cutlip and Gary McLean; grandsons, Chad Cutlip and David and Michelle Calanog Paul; and also Bertie Jane Cutlip, the mother of his children.

Rex joined the U.S. Navy at 17. He served in the U.S. Navy’s 7th Fleet as a motor machinist mate during World War II. He earned the Pacific Theater ribbon, American Theater ribbon, the Philippines Liberation Medal and Word War II Victory Medal. He was also a golden glove boxer during his time in the Navy.

Rex was a Baptist by faith and attended Pickens Baptist Church. He was a volunteer firefighter for many years, a member of the VFW and was also a pool shark. He built several homes including the family farm house and cabins. He was many instruments, violins, mandolins and gun stocks.

Rex is survived by his sons; Craig F. Cutlip, George B. Cutlip with whom he made his home with. Daughters; Marsha J. Cutlip (husband Tony) Paul, Mary E. Cutlip and his like a daughter Charolotte Short; granddaughters, Karry Yeager, Shiloh Cutlip Paul (Lee) Smith, Rexana Cutlip (Jamie ) McCourt, Sarah Paul (Joe) Blasioli, Ashley Cutlip, Rebecca Paul (Chris) Ward and a grandson, Charles E. Cutlip; great grandchildren, Howard, Linda, Sedena and Ellis Yeager, Brighton and Bradley Paul Hiller, Kaitlyn Paul, Ayden Paul Calanog, Jonah and Georgia Blasioli, Graham, Lilah and Icie Ward. Special friend Betty Wilmoth and numerous other friends; special great nieces, Jessica Cutlip Short and Charl Cutlip Jordan and many other nieces and nephews.

Service will be 2:00 PM, Thursday, April 2, 2026 at Dodd & Reed Funeral Home, Webster Springs with Pastor Jeff Swecker officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Dave Cogar Cemetery, Sugar Creek. Friends may join the family for visitation 6-9 PM Wednesday evening at the funeral home.
