Dempsey Ray Carpenter, 84 of Hacker Valley passed away Friday, March 13, 2026, at his home. Dempsey was born August 2, 1941, in Hacker Valley and was the son of the late Hubert and Georgia Cowger Carpenter. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Loyd Carpenter and his wife Loretta and brother-in-law Kenny Cowger and his wife Karen.

Dempsey was Methodist by faith; he worked in the woods and saw mills the majority of his life. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and shooting his bow. Dempsey was also a well-known potterists for almost 50 years; pieces of Dempseys pottery are all over the country, including at the Tamarack in Beckley.

Surviving are his wife, Wilma Cowger Carpenter; son, Leonard Carpenter and his wife Rita; sister, Arvella Moats and her husband Richard; sister-in-law, Kathy Anderson and her husband Junior; grandchildren, Broc Carpenter and his wife Nikki and Logan Carpenter; great grandchildren, Traey. Mason and Hannah Carpenter; his puppy Jake and also several nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Service will be 2:00 PM, Saturday, March 21, 2026, at Dodd & Reed Funeral Home, Webster Springs with Pastor Phillip Channell officiating. Burial will follow at Replete Cemetery. Friends may join the family for visitation 12 Noon until service time at the funeral home on Saturday.
