Betty J. “BJ” Humphries, 80 of Myrtle Beach, SC went home to be with the Lord on Friday, June 6, 2025. She was born August 3, 1944 in Webster Springs to the late Lawrence & Effie Westfall Payne of Webster Springs.
She is survived by her husband, Robert Humphries of Myrtle Beach, SC; sister Lemona Carpenter of Webster Springs; brother Robin and his wife Kathy Payne of Webster Springs; nieces: Cheryl Neurdorf of Akron, OH, Kimberly Runyon of Lauderdale, MS, Karen Tompkins of Sheridan, AK, and Donna of Pine Bluff, AK; nephews: Bryan and Brandon Payne and Larry Carpenter, all of Webster Springs, Airon Carpenter of Harpers Ferry, WV, and John Payne, Jr. of Lauderdale, MS; God-daughter Lisa Roby of Indian Head, MD; special friends: Ray Dempsey of Fredericksburg, VA, Arlene Murray of Springfield, VA, Faith Posten of Jacksonville, FL, Jamie and Debby Callender of Springfield, VA; and Alfred Clay of Webster Springs; and several extended family and friends to mourn her passing.
BJ graduated from Washington High School in Massillon, OH. Attended Maryland University, and Howard University in Washington, DC. She started her career as a clerk typist with the FBI in Washington, DC, September 1963 to 1967, transferred to the Navy Department, 1967 – 1981, 1981-2001 with Defense Investigative Service and rest of her government career was with the Navy Department until retirement in January 2001.
Obtained her Real Estate license in VA and worked part-time in Real Estate, part-time weekends from 1973 through 2004. From 2001 to 2009 worked for a government contractor (CSCI), at the Pentagon. She atte4nded the Socastee Baptist Church of Myrtle Beach, SC.
In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her brothers: David, Phillip J., Romney, Johnny, Mike, Delmas and Arthur Payne; sister Karen Sue Payne; brother-in-law Robert Carpenter; and special friends: Eileen Dempsey, Melinda Roberts, and Betty Clay.
Funeral Services to celebrate BJ’s life will be held on Sunday, June 15, 2025 at 2:00 PM at Dodd & Reed Funeral Home, Webster Springs, with Pastor William Ausley officiating. Interment will follow in Union Cemetery, Parcoal.
Friends may join the family for visitation one hour prior to service time, from 1:00 to 2:00 PM, at Dodd & Reed Funeral Home.
