Betty June Anderson Cutlip, 80 years old, of Diana, West Virginia, left this world on January 2, 2026 surrounded by the love of her family following a courageous journey with Parkinson’s disease.

She was born on November 1, 1945, in Buckhannon, West Virginia, to Harvey B. Anderson and Sylvia V. McCartney Anderson. Betty lost her mother at a young age and helped raise her siblings serving as part mother, part referee and full time chaos wrangler all while becoming a first time mother herself. She often talked about trying to keep up with them and occasionally stretching the necks of their T-shirts when they attempted a quick escape. A story she always told with a grin.At her dad’s house, Betty had to stand on the second step to reach Charles for a goodnight kiss. She and Charles were married on a snowy Christmas Day in 1965. Their honeymoon in Summersville didn’t go quite as planned and they spent a few quiet nights snowed in at a motel in Craigsville. All stores were closed due to the weather so the two of them survived on Vienna sausages and bananas. That second step witnessed many kisses in the cold weather just before Charles shipped out for Vietnam.

She lived most of her life in Diana with the exception of a brief time in Ohio just long enough to give birth to her son Shawn, the family’s only Buckeye.

Betty was always curious and creatively gifted. She mastered every craft she set her mind to including photography, macramé, ceramics, painting, quilting, cross-stitch, scrap booking, or designing Barbie clothes. She was actively involved in her children’s education volunteering with the PTA at Diana Grade School and neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night prevented her from attending all parades, band performances, school events and sports competitions of her grand children until her body no longer allowed it.

She served proudly as Chief Summer Recreation Judge by carefully deciding whose dive earned top honors at the swimming hole behind the house. She turned games of hide-and-seek, Chutes and Ladders, and jumping over a candlestick with her grandchildren into moments that were remembered long after the games were over. She was an honored audience for every story, song and dance by both her children and grandchildren. She proudly served as Honorary Co-Pilot enjoying every moment being chauffeured by each of her grandchildren as they got their learner permits. She also served as Chief Story Weaver with her made up bedtime stories that filled her both her children and grandchildren’s nights with warmth, wonder and comfort. Her heart melted and her tears flowed every time her husband of 60 years sang Blue Christmas. A small, sweet ritual of love that we enjoyed over and over again.

She is survived by her loving husband: Charles O. Cutlip; her daughters: Laura Stout (James Stout) and Lisa Hefner; (Andrew Hefner) and her son: Shawn Cutlip (Loretta Cutlip); a brother: Dean Anderson; and a sister: Susan Hanna. She was a loving grandmother to Emily Miller, Megan Stout, Brandon Cutlip, Ethan Hefner, Erin Hefner, Amanda Cutlip and a great-grandson,Weston Miller. Betty was preceded in death by her parents and her brother: Larry D. Anderson and sister: Kelly Anderson Hall.

She shared a special friendship with Sherry Wyne and they toured West Virginia together turning ordinary trips into comedy sketches, unforgettable misadventures and endless photo opportunities. Betty was cared for with compassion and dedication by her family and her caregiver, Debora Clevenger, whose kindness and support are deeply appreciated.

She will be remembered for her enduring strength, her love for her family and the joy she found in friendship, family, creativity and shared adventures.

Betty specifically requested that her daughter Laura write this obituary. Simply because she won a creative writing award in grade school and that made her more than qualified.

At her request, cremation will be private with no formal services.
