Bertha Pearl Simmons, 86, of Hacker Valley passed away on Saturday, October 19, 2013 at St. Joseph's Hospital Nursing Care Facility in Buckhannon. She was born March 20, 1927 in Webster County to Jasper Newton and Roena Cowger Carpenter and was a homemaker.  She was a lifelong resident of Webster County and was a Christian. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, gardening, and most of all her precious children and grandchildren. She attended Cowger Hill Community Church in Hacker Valley and the church services at St. Joseph's NCF.

Bertha is survived by her daughters Joan Sue (husband Carl) Williams of Buckhannon, Janice (husband Joe) McDaniels of Buckhannon, Linda (husband Henry) Cochran of Wellington, OH, Charlene Johnston of Buckhannon, Doris (husband Robert) Neenan of Wellington, OH, Zelda (husband Rick) Bender of Hacker Valley, and Jill (husband John) Stemple of Buckhannon; sons Garry (wife Barbara) Simmons of Lodi, OH, Noah (wife Diane) Simmons of Lodi, OH, Virgil Joey (wife Sylvia) Simmons of Hacker Valley, and Shelby (wife Hilda) Simmons of Hacker Valley; brothers Hubert Carpenter of Richwood and Olen Carpenter of Hacker Valley; sisters Edna Simmons of Webster Springs, Alma Anderson of Hacker Valley, Alta Cogar of Hacker Valley, Goldie Cool of Morgantown, and Margie (husband Wilbur) Cutlip of Cleveland; grandchildren Douglas, Shelly, Diane, Laticia, Debbie, Brian, Carrie, Eric, Nicholas, Teal, Melissa, Clarissa, Catlin, Kara, and Shelbie Lynn; step-grandchildren Misty and Joey; great-grandchildren Trevor, Tiffany, Jennifer, Kiara, Harper, Natalie, Preston, Anastasia, Franklin, Everett, Sylas, Aiden, and Alyssa; and step-great-grandchildren Zachary Salmons, Collin and Chryssa Popson, and Allison and Erica.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband and Navy Veteran June E. Simmons; great-granddaughter Ava Simone Williams; son-in-law Ernest "Junior" Lower; brother Opha Carpenter; and sister Macil Simmons.

Friends may join the family for visitation on Tuesday, October 22, 2013 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at Dodd & Reed Funeral Home. Funeral Services to celebrate Bertha's life will be held on Wednesday at 1:00 PM at the Funeral Home with Rev. James Edward "Ed" McDaniels officiating.  Interment will follow in Ware Cemetery, Hacker Valley.
