Bernice Garnet “Bernie” Bates, 81 of Diana, passed away on Tuesday, December 29, 2015 at Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston. She was born January 18, 1934 in Guardian to Walter and Velva Carpenter Hall and graduated from Webster Springs High School in 1952. She received her RN from St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Huntington and her BS of Nursing from Emory University, Mid Atlanta.

Bernice was a nurse for 50 years in WV, VA, CA, FL, and GA. She was always a caregiver to family, friends, and those around her and encouraged others to develop their talents and do their best. Bernice loved books and photography. She was always reading or stopping along the roadside taking pictures.

Bernice is survived by her siblings Hollis Ray (Thersa) Hall of Youngstown, Carolyn Ann (Doyle) Smith of Dunbar, Roger Lee (Terri) Hall of Nokesville, VA, Raleigh Levi Hall of Buckhannon, Patricia Lou Cochran of Guardian, Marlene Sue (Danny) Williamson of Franklin, TN and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Franklin D. Bates; and sons John Martin Bates and George Franklin Bates.

Friends may join the family for visitation on Saturday, January 2, 2016 from 11-1 at Dodd & Reed Funeral Home. Funeral Services to celebrate Bernice’s life will be held at 1 PM at the Funeral Home with Rev. Doyle Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Hall Family Cemetery, Guardian.

In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made to Diana Eagles Community Center or the Hall Family Cemetery.
